Lunar Year Event ("Seollal") at the Korean Cultural Center

I learned about Korea by doing “sebae”, eating a bowl of “ddeokguk” and listening to traditional fairy tales

On January 25, 2020, the Korean Cultural Center in Washington D.C. (Director Jun-suk Hwang) hosted a New Year's event and about 100 Korean adopted children and their adoptive family attended. ASIA Families’ Founder, Grace Song co-hosted the event and the children (age from 2 to 16 years old) learned about “seollal” (Korean Lunar New Year) by doing “sebae” to their adoptive parents in “hanbok” (Korean traditional dress) and having “ddeokguk” (rice cake soup) together.

In greeting, the Director Hwang said, “It is very special to have “Seollal” with Korean adopted children and their adoptive family. I hope you all experience not only traditional Korean culture but also other Korean content programs today and build long lasting memories. The ASIA Families Founder Hwa-kang Song thanked the Director Hwang and said – I hope all adopted children and their family here today learn about Korea and become more familiar with the Korean culture.” Kkotch-sgye Shin, Policy Officer of the Ministry of Welfare in the Korean Embassy made special acknowledgement for the event. 

The Director Jae-ok Jang of Global Korean Food Research Institute provided traditional “seollal” food – “ddeokguk”, “bulgogi” (Korean style grilled beef), “japchae” (Korean style stir-fried noodle and vegetable), and traditional Korean palace style hors d'oeuvre made with pine nut sauce. She also demonstrated how to make “gimbap” (Korean style rolled rice in dried seaweed) to the families. All children and their parents really enjoyed “seollal” food. The Director Jang said –Eating “ddeokguk” on “seollal” is Korean tradition to gain health, wish long life, wealth, abundance and good harvest for the New Year. 

All children and their families also enjoyed various Korean content experience programs such as K-animation screening, playroom (game zone), and craft corner.

Other Korean content experience program included Sandy Rodeheaver, an adoptive parent and teacher, reading of the Korean traditional fairy tale book, “The Story of White Rat” and the Nanta performance by Selah Art Music and Dance Group, made up of international students from Korea. Especially, the Nanta performance got the attention from many at the event since it combined traditional Korean rhythm with modern musical forms.

세배하고 떡국 먹고 전래동화 들으며 한국 배웠어요

워싱턴 한국문화원(원장 황준석)이 한인 입양어린이와 가족 100여명을 초청한 설 행사를 개최했다. 지난 25일 문화원에서 아시아 패밀리스(Asia Families, 대표 송화강)와 공동진행한 행사에서 입양어린이(2세~16세)와 가족들은 떡국을 먹고 한복 차림으로 양부모에게 세배를 하며 설날에 대해 배웠다.

황준석 문화원장은 “입양 어린이와 양부모, 가족과 함께 하는 설날이 특별하다. 오늘은 한국 전통문화 뿐 아니라 한국의 새로운 콘텐츠를 경험하고 좋은 추억으로 간직하길 바란다”고 인사했다. 송화강 대표는 “오늘 행사를 통해 입양아들이 자신을 낳아준 모국에 대해 알고, 양부모님들은 한국에 대해 더 가까이 가는 계기가 되길 바란다”며 황 문화원장에게 감사장을 전했다. 대사관의 신 꽃시계 복지관도 행사를 격려했다.

설 행사에 빠질 수 없는 떡국 등 한식 체험은 입양인 가족에게 큰 인기를 끌었다. 장재옥 원장(세계한식요리연구원)은 건강과 복을 가져다주는 설음식으로 떡국, 불고기, 잡채, 잣소스로 무친 궁중 전채요리를 제공했으며 ‘김밥 만들기’를 시연하고 가르쳐 주었다. 장 원장은 “설날 전통음식인 떡국은 장수를 기원하는 음식이다. 흰색 음식은 밝은 한 해, 부와 풍요로움, 풍년을 기원하는 마음이 들어있다”고 설명했다.

이날 K-애니메이션 상영, 놀이방(게임 존), 공예 코너 등 다양한 한국 콘텐츠 체험 프로그램도 큰 호응을 얻었다.

입양인의 양부모이자 현직 교사인 샌디 로드헤버 씨는 한국 전래동화인 ‘흰쥐 이야기’ 책을 읽어주는 행사를 진행했다. 특히 한국 유학생으로 구성된 셀라아트 뮤직 앤 댄스 그룹(Selahart Music and Dance Group)의 난타 공연은 참가자들에게 흥겨운 볼거리를 선사했다.
